Achillobator

A large Mongolian dromaeosaur with powerful hind limbs and an unusual pelvis, reconstructed from one incomplete skeleton.

Achillobator giganticus was a large predatory paravian from the Bayan Shireh Formation of Mongolia. Its single partial skeleton combines a dromaeosaurid jaw and limbs with a remarkably vertical pubis. It documents the variety of large Asian “raptors”, but does not preserve a complete body.

Carnivory is direct

A deep maxilla preserves recurved, serrated teeth, but not a complete skull.

Discovery and material

A joint Mongolian–Russian expedition found the specimen at Burkhant in 1989. Perle Altangerel, Mark Norell and James Clark named it in 1999. MNUFR-15 contains a 29-centimetre left maxilla, vertebrae, ribs, shoulder elements, pelvis bones, both femora, a tibia, metatarsals and toe bones.

The genus name combines Achilles with Mongolian baatar, “hero”, referring to the tendon system expected to operate the specialised second toe. Tendons themselves are not preserved. Only one species is recognised.

Size and anatomy

Reconstructions near 4.5–5.5 metres and 250–350 kilograms are reasonable ranges. Values around six metres depend on how the missing spine and tail are restored. The femur is about 50.5 centimetres and slightly longer than the tibia, while the foot is stout. These proportions do not indicate a specialist long-distance runner.

The jaw had about eleven tooth positions with recurved serrated crowns. A long stabilised tail and enlarged second-toe claw are strong dromaeosaurid inferences, but their exact dimensions are not preserved. The nearly vertical pubis and enlarged lower “boot” are unusual for the family.

Classification and the chimera question

Analyses consistently place Achillobator among dromaeosaurids, often near Utahraptor and Dromaeosaurus, although its position within Eudromaeosauria changes. The odd pelvis led to a proposal that the specimen combines taxa. The bones were found together, match in size and preservation, and remain widely coded as one animal, but a new articulated skeleton would be the strongest test.

Habitat, diet and reconstruction

Bayan Shireh rocks record rivers, floodplains and associated water bodies. Dates from different parts of the formation broadly span Cenomanian to Santonian time, but they do not date MNUFR-15 itself. Therizinosaurs, ornithomimosaurs, armoured dinosaurs, early hadrosauroids and sauropods occupied the wider ecosystem.

Teeth establish carnivory, not a particular prey. There are no stomach contents, attributable bite marks, nests or group remains. Pack hunting, exact speed and prey preference are unknown. Feathers are likely from family relationships, as explained in the integument guide.
