What can the fossils tell us?
P, M and transitional S elements occupied different positions in the feeding apparatus.

Acodus is a genus of Early Ordovician conodonts known almost entirely from microscopic phosphatic elements. They are often called “teeth”, but they were not the teeth of a jawed vertebrate. More than two thousand elements from Australia allowed researchers to test the composition of the apparatus and separate the genus from superficially similar forms.
From one element to a complete apparatus
Christian Pander established Acodus in 1856 from simple cone-shaped elements. The type specimens were later lost, and comparable cones acquired several names. Consequently, not every old record labelled Acodus matches the genus as it is now understood.
Studies of multi-element apparatuses showed that one animal carried elements with several forms and mechanical roles. Reconstructions identify paired P and M positions plus a transitional series of S elements, producing seven morphological positions. Comparing the whole set is more reliable than identifying one cone in isolation.
What the elements did
The elements sat in the throat region and worked together to seize, guide or process food. That is a functional inference from their arrangement, shape and wear. The exact diet is not preserved, so Acodus cannot responsibly be assigned one specific prey item.
The living animal was probably a small elongated conodont bearer with a fin fold, broadly comparable with rare soft-bodied conodont fossils. No such body belongs directly to Acodus. Eyes, tail shape and colour in artwork therefore come from the anatomy of the wider group, not from a complete specimen of this genus.
Age and geological value
Acodus lived during a major Ordovician reorganisation of marine ecosystems. Its elements occur in limestones from several regions and can help correlate beds. Useful biostratigraphy nevertheless requires identification to species and attention to local faunal provinces.
Large collections of A. longibasis and A. triangularis supported a distinct seven-element plan. They also show why the old taxonomy of isolated “teeth” needs revision. The animal cannot be reduced to one element shape.
The Cambrian animal catalogue includes Acodus because it follows the established Russian collection order, while the profile makes its Early Ordovician age explicit.
