What can the fossils tell us?

The original carapace is damaged

Its missing front and probable juvenile state made the first diagnosis difficult.

Acratia is a genus of fossil ostracods, tiny crustaceans whose body was enclosed between two mineralised valves. Fossils are commonly fractions of a millimetre long. Researchers therefore know the carapace much better than the limbs, sensory organs or diet of the animal inside.

A genus founded on a difficult specimen

Delo introduced Acratia in 1930 for material from boreholes in western Texas. The type species, A. typica, was based on a damaged carapace that may have belonged to an immature individual. Its missing front made the original diagnosis less useful than a complete adult shell.

Later revisions compared the type with better preserved species, including A. deloi from the Mississippian Salem Limestone of Indiana. Some forms formerly placed in the genus were moved elsewhere. The history shows why a smooth microfossil cannot be identified from general silhouette alone.

What the valves preserve

The carapace was elongated and relatively smooth. The ventral margin approached a straight line, the dorsal margin was arched and the rear narrowed. Well-preserved shells carry a projection at the front. One valve overlapped the other around the free edge but not along the hinge line.

There is no single size for every species. Adult shells of one Late Permian form from Iran and neighbouring areas measured about 0.63–0.68 millimetres. Other species differed, and juveniles add another source of variation.

A long and qualified fossil range

Material identified as Acratia occurs in Devonian, Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic marine deposits. This does not describe one unchanged species lasting hundreds of millions of years. It represents a sequence of named forms whose boundaries continue to be revised.

Large samples of valves can help correlate beds and trace changes in marine conditions. A single shell is less decisive because convergence, deformation and growth can alter the outline. Comparison with Bairdiacypris shows how similar unrelated or only distantly related smooth ostracods may look.

Life behind the shell

Most members of this fossil group are interpreted as benthic. A tiny animal could crawl on or within the upper sediment and perhaps swim briefly. Bacteria, detritus or minute prey are possible foods by analogy with living ostracods, but the mouthparts of Acratia are not preserved.

Artwork must borrow antennae and legs from the general ostracod body plan. Their exact bristles, colour and posture are not direct evidence. The ancient arthropod catalogue separates such reconstructions from the observed shell.
