What can the fossils tell us?
Crania preserve small nostrils, a wide rear region and room for strong jaw muscles.
Narrower front teeth seized food while low rounded rear crowns resisted crushing loads.
Some species rest on skulls, while isolated blunt teeth alone are less secure.
Eye and nostril position fit waterside habits, but time spent in water is not preserved.
Acynodon departed from the familiar long-jawed crocodilian shape. Its snout was extremely short and broad, while the teeth changed along the jaw. Narrower front crowns could seize food and low multicusped rear teeth could apply pressure to resistant objects.
José Luis Sanz and colleagues named the genus in 1997 from Laño in northern Spain. The type species, A. iberoccitanus, refers to records on both sides of the Pyrenees. Better skulls from southern France later clarified its unusual construction.
A jaw divided into working zones
The skull was low and expanded behind the snout. When the jaws closed, teeth entered gaps and pits in the opposite row. Mechanical studies connect the shortened muzzle with an efficient transfer of muscle force to the rear teeth.
Molluscs, crustaceans and small armoured vertebrates are plausible foods. A capacity to crush does not identify one exclusive prey, and direct stomach contents are absent. Omnivory therefore remains possible.
Fossils across the European archipelago
Material comes from Campanian and Maastrichtian deposits in Spain, France, Italy and Romania. Europe then consisted of islands divided by shallow seas. Freshwater and coastal basins supported distinct reptile communities.
The Italian species A. adriaticus is known from associated material including a skull, neck and forelimb. One mature individual preserves heavy skull ossification, an arthritic jaw joint and a possible dental anomaly. These pathologies describe that animal, not the whole genus.
Size and relationships
Complete articulated skeletons are rare, so total length is reconstructed rather than measured. Most restorations show an animal roughly one to two metres long. A larger value cannot be inferred from one isolated tooth.
Early studies compared the genus with alligatoroids. Broader analyses instead place it within Hylaeochampsidae, a European branch of basal eusuchians outside the crown group of living crocodilians. Similar crushing teeth evolved independently in several lineages.
Environment and reconstruction limits
Acynodon lived beside other European eusuchians including Allodaposuchus. Different snouts and teeth imply different feeding mechanics without proving direct competition. The Cretaceous Period guide places these island faunas near the end of the Mesozoic.
Bones support a short broad head and small armoured body. Skin colour, markings, pupil shape and a particular shell in its mouth remain artistic choices.
Species and uneven evidence
The genus contains records of very different quality. A. iberoccitanus is represented by informative skull material from the western European archipelago, whereas some referrals depend on isolated teeth. Rounded crowns can evolve independently in animals exposed to similar feeding stresses, so a single tooth cannot establish the whole skull or relationship.
A. adriaticus provides a rare associated individual from Italy. The preserved neck and forelimb help constrain body construction, while fused and diseased joints reveal age and injury in one animal. They do not show that arthritis or dental irregularity characterised the species. This distinction between diagnosis and individual life history prevents a pathology from becoming a generic trait in reconstructions.
