What can the fossils tell us?

Several skulls show the unusual teeth repeatedly

The anatomy is not an accidental deformation of one specimen.

Adamisaurus magnidentatus was a small but strongly built lizard from the Late Cretaceous Gobi. Massive jaws and large teeth with broad bases distinguish it from many insect-eating lizards of the same deposits. Several skulls and associated bones confirm that the construction was real, although none preserves a meal that would settle its diet.

Discovery and material

Polish-Mongolian expeditions recovered the type specimen at Bayn Dzak in the Djadokhta Formation. Andrzej Sulimski named the animal in 1972. The holotype, ZPAL MgR-II/80, is a skull missing the occipital region but retaining the lower jaws. He also referred the front of another skull, ZPAL MgR-II/49, to the species.

Later finds expanded the record to Tugrikin Shire, Ukhaa Tolgod, Khulsan, Hermiin Tsav and Bayan Mandahu. They include skulls and skeletons of varying completeness. A specimen from Inner Mongolia, IVPP V10054, exposes the upper teeth from above and supplies information that the compressed holotype cannot show alone.

Skull and enlarged teeth

The premaxillary region was broad, the jugal was substantial and the tooth-bearing part of the lower jaw extended far backwards. Together these features produced a more robust feeding apparatus than in many small Gobi squamates. The species name magnidentatus refers directly to the large teeth.

The crowns were not simple needles. Their bases widened across the jaw and the tips could be offset, producing a more complex cutting or crushing surface. Older drawings disagree about exact crown outlines, so comparisons with other polyglyphanodonts must use actual specimens rather than a single diagram.

Broad teeth could process tough plant material, armoured invertebrates or a mixed diet. None of these possibilities is proved. There are no stomach contents, identifiable coprolites or sufficiently diagnostic wear patterns. Tooth mechanics narrows the options without selecting one food.

Relationships

Sulimski created Adamisauridae for the genus. Later studies more often place it in Polyglyphanodontia, a varied Cretaceous radiation from Asia and North America. These lizards share combinations of jaw and dental features, but their crowns differ markedly.

That diversity matters because similar broad teeth need not indicate identical diets or immediate kinship. A phylogenetic placement is also sensitive to incomplete skull regions and changing character matrices. Adamisaurus is securely a squamate, while its precise branch inside Polyglyphanodontia remains open to revision.

Size and reconstruction

No complete adult body fixes total length. The skull was several centimetres long and the animal probably measured tens of centimetres overall. A more exact value would depend on choosing another lizard as a proportional model, which would introduce false precision.

Skin, colour and soft tissues are unknown. A sturdy head on a conventional terrestrial lizard body is reasonable, but the animal should not be portrayed as a miniature dinosaur. The catalogue keeps it among squamates and separates the measured head from the restored body.

Gobi habitat

The Djadokhta and Barun Goyot formations record dry landscapes with dunes, temporary watercourses and patches of vegetation. Their diverse small vertebrates show that this was not a lifeless modern-style sand desert.

Short movement across the ground, foraging around plants and sheltering in uneven terrain are plausible. No trackway belongs securely to the genus. Its ecological role is therefore reconstructed from jaw anatomy and depositional setting, with behaviour kept at the level of inference.
