Aigialosaurus dalmaticus was an early marine mosasauroid from the Late Cretaceous of Croatia. One articulated skeleton shows a long-bodied squamate that retained four comparatively ordinary feet. It represents an early combination of marine adaptations rather than a late mosasaur that returned to land.
The Hvar specimen
The holotype and only reliable specimen is BSP 1902 II 501. It came from marine limestone on the island of Hvar, dated from the late Cenomanian to the Turonian. The species name refers to Dalmatia.
The skeleton is flattened and several bones overlap. Early descriptions misidentified parts of the skull and pelvis. Re-examination corrected their positions and showed that some features once assigned to the genus were actually cracks, displaced fragments or superimposed bones. This history makes the specimen a lesson in testing a two-dimensional fossil before coding anatomy.
Skull and teeth
The skull was elongated but less massive than in large later mosasaurs. Conical recurved teeth could grip slippery prey. Skull joints were not as specialised for movement as those of the most derived marine members of the group.
No stomach contents survive. Small fish and soft-bodied animals match the size and dental construction, but naming a particular prey species would go beyond the evidence.
Pelvis and ordinary feet
The pelvis is especially informative. The ilium carried long anterior and posterior processes, and its articulations differ from older published restorations. All four limbs retained separate digits rather than forming broad paddles.
Those feet could contribute to steering and perhaps limited support in shallow water. The tail and lateral bends of the body probably produced most thrust. The skeleton does not reveal how long the animal could remain on land, how deeply it dived or how fast it swam.
Size and coastal life
Aigialosaurus reached a little over one metre, although the end of the tail is incomplete. A slender body suited movement through coastal water. The Hvar limestone formed in a warm marine basin.
Articulation shows that the carcass was buried before it completely disintegrated. It does not prove that the animal died in exactly the microhabitat where it usually hunted, because bodies can drift before burial.
Place in mosasauroid evolution
Analyses place Aigialosaurus close to the base of Mosasauroidea. Its marine skull and long body occur together with limbs that had not become true flippers. This helps distinguish early traits from later specialisations of giant mosasaurs.
Other small marine squamates retained legs but differ in pelvic and vertebral anatomy. The comparison is a branching radiation, not a ladder in which one named genus must transform directly into the next.
The catalogue places the animal beside Adriosaurus so the two patterns of early marine adaptation can be compared without merging them.
