What can the fossils tell us?

The genus was once overextended

European and North American blunt-toothed forms were grouped by resemblance before revision.

Allognathosuchus is often described as a small crocodilian that cracked shells with rounded teeth. The rear crowns were indeed enlarged and blunt, but the name was historically applied to many similar Palaeogene fossils. Revision narrowed the genus and made its ecology more precise.

Name and taxonomic revision

Edward Cope first named the type species Crocodylus polyodon from the Eocene Bridger Formation of Wyoming. Charles Mook created Allognathosuchus for it in 1921. Later workers assigned short-snouted fossils from Europe and North America to the same genus mainly because of their crushing teeth.

A 2004 review showed that many did not form a natural group with the type species. Old maps spanning several continents therefore describe a historical wastebasket, not the secure modern range.

A divided tooth row

Front teeth were narrower and suited to gripping. Crowns farther back became low, expanded and rounded. Food held at the front could be moved towards the jaw joint, where muscle leverage was greater.

Snails, bivalves, crustaceans and other resistant items are plausible. A broad crushing surface does not prove exclusive mollusc eating, and stomach contents are lacking.

Warm Eocene Wyoming

The Bridger Formation preserves lakes, rivers and floodplains in a climate warmer than modern Wyoming. Several crocodylomorph lineages shared these fresh waters. Differences in size and teeth could reduce competition without showing one direct encounter.

Relationships and reconstruction

Analyses place the type species among early alligatoroids, relatively near the branch containing Alligator. That position does not establish direct ancestry. A short broad snout and low armoured body are reasonable, while colour and a shell in the mouth remain artistic.

Why the old species list became shorter

Blunt posterior teeth are visually striking but are also a functional response that appeared in unrelated crocodilian branches. Earlier authors used that resemblance to unite fossils from several continents. Modern revision gives more weight to the surrounding skull bones, tooth positions and character combinations tied to the type species.

Removing a referred species does not make its fossil invalid. It means that the specimen belongs elsewhere or cannot yet be assigned securely. For readers, the practical result is a narrower map: the clearest evidence for Allognathosuchus concerns the North American type species rather than every Palaeogene animal with rounded teeth.

Feeding without a preserved meal

Posterior crushing teeth show what the jaw could process, not how frequently it did so. A generalist could combine hard-shelled invertebrates with fish, carrion or small vertebrates. Wear patterns and associated fauna refine possibilities, but in the absence of gut contents no percentage can be assigned to each food category.
