What can the fossils tell us?
Head, articulated thorax and large tail shield give the genus a broad oval outline.
The extreme periscope form belongs especially to A. kowalewskii within a related series.
Trilobites shed their exoskeleton as they grew.
Bottom gathering or omnivory is safer than calling it a proven ambush predator.
Asaphus was a Middle Ordovician trilobite of the Baltic palaeobasin. Its broad, smooth exoskeleton is often found complete. A sequence of related species also records the progressive elevation of the visual surface, ending in the long rigid eye bases of A. kowalewskii.
Shell, limbs and moulting
The body comprised a head shield, an articulated thorax and a large tail shield. Paired limbs lay below the mineralised shell and are preserved far less often. Growth required moulting, so separated cheeks or shields may be cast exoskeleton rather than the remains of a dead animal.
A low profile and wide outline fit life on or just within the upper seafloor. The shell could flex for protection, although the degree of enclosure varied by species and preservation. It differed markedly from the narrow blind Ampyx.
Eyes above the sediment
The eyes were holochroal, with many small lenses covered by a common transparent layer. Internal structures beneath fossil lenses have been interpreted as crystalline cones, although details of soft optical tissue remain debated.
In the lineage culminating in A. kowalewskii, the visual surfaces rose on long mineralised supports. They could remain above the substrate while the body rested partly buried. This is a functional explanation supported by form, not a preserved observation of one animal hiding in sediment.
Ordinary species of Asaphus had much lower eyes. Images that give every member of the genus towering stalks erase real variation and turn a specialised species into a universal body plan.
Feeding and community
The mouth opened below the head and limbs moved food towards it. No typical specimen preserves a final meal. A benthic gatherer or omnivore taking small particles and organisms is a cautious reconstruction; an ambush-hunting role is not established by elevated eyes alone.

No. Very tall rigid eye bases are characteristic of specialised species such as Asaphus kowalewskii.
