Bambiraptor feinbergi is known from an exceptionally complete small skeleton from the Two Medicine Formation of Montana. The animal was not a tiny adult but a juvenile. Its bones reveal long arms, a mobile grasping hand and a specialised second toe, while its status as a separate genus remains debated.

A complete skeleton with important cautions

Unusually complete

The skull and most of the postcranial skeleton are preserved, although some limb bones represent more than one animal.

Discovery and naming

Fourteen-year-old Wes Linster found the skeleton in September 1993 about nineteen kilometres west of Bynum. His family began recovering the fragile bones, whose preparation took thousands of hours. A preliminary report compared the animal with Saurornitholestes. David Burnham and colleagues named Bambiraptor feinbergi in 2000.

“Bambi” was the family’s nickname for the small animal, while raptor means robber or grabber. The species honours Michael and Ann Feinberg. The alternative spelling feinbergorum was proposed as a grammatical correction for a name honouring two people; it does not represent a second species. The specimen, first numbered FIP 001, is now AMNH FR 30556.

What the fossil preserves

The describers estimated that more than ninety per cent of the skeleton was represented. The skull is nearly complete and relatively undeformed. Both lower jaws, much of the vertebral column, a furcula, long forelimbs, pelvis, hind limbs and much of the tail are present.

Later examination identified elements from three lower hind legs of similar size among the material. This indicates more than one individual. “Composite” or “chimera” here does not mean a fake; it means that naturally or during collection, bones of multiple animals entered one specimen set. Larger isolated bones found nearby were also referred to Bambiraptor, but they do not make a complete and securely identified adult.

Size, hands and feet

The preserved juvenile measured about ninety centimetres, usually rounded to one metre. Its skull was about 12.5 centimetres long, the femur about 11.9 centimetres and the tibia roughly 16.8 centimetres. Those values show a lightly built animal with long lower legs. They cannot define a reliable adult body mass.

The forelimbs were long relative to the femur. The skeleton includes a large furcula, paired ossified sternal plates, a semilunate wrist bone and a three-fingered hand with curved claws. Joint studies support two-handed grasping and pulling objects towards the chest. Calling the first digit an “opposable thumb” exaggerates the motion and falsely compares it with a primate hand.

Overlapping processes and chevrons reinforced the tail without turning it into a rigid rod. The second toe carried an enlarged curved claw, comparable with the specialised foot of Deinonychus. It probably helped restrain prey, but its exact use is not preserved.

Classification, feathers and ecology

Bambiraptor is securely a dromaeosaurid, but its narrower position shifts between analyses. It is often grouped with the North American saurornitholestines. The juvenile age matters because skull proportions and processes change during growth. A modern review concluded that the diagnoses of Bambiraptor and Saurornitholestes need clarification, so the possibility that Bambiraptor is a young member of that genus remains open.

No skin or feathers were preserved. Plumage is a strong inference from its position among feathered paravians and direct fossils such as Microraptor. The Two Medicine setting included river channels and floodplains. Hadrosaur, tyrannosaurid, eggshell and charred-wood remains describe the community and burial environment, not a list of Bambiraptor’s prey.

Curved serrated teeth establish carnivory. Long arms may have assisted capture, but stomach contents, attributable bite marks and direct evidence of group hunting are absent. Claims of bird-like intelligence based on braincase proportions are also too strong, especially because juvenile animals have different head-to-body proportions from adults.
