Buitreraptor

A small Patagonian paravian known from a near-complete skeleton, long narrow jaws and many delicate teeth without cutting serrations.

Buitreraptor gonzalezorum was a small predatory paravian from the Candeleros Formation of Argentina, approximately 100–94 million years old. The articulated holotype and additional individuals make it one of the best-known unenlagiines and reveal that southern paravians were not simply copies of northern dromaeosaurids.

What the skeleton establishes

Unusually complete

MPCA 245 preserves most of the skull, spine and limbs in articulation.

Discovery and material

Peter Makovicky, Sebastián Apesteguía and Federico Agnolín named the genus in 2005. MPCA 245 preserves most of the skull and lower jaw, neck, trunk, sacrum, tail, shoulder and pelvic elements, and all four limbs. Additional specimens complete parts of the hand and foot and reveal variation between individuals.

The name links La Buitrera with Latin raptor; the species honours Fabián and Jorge González. Only one species is recognised. Bone histology later showed the holotype was less mature than another specimen, so one exact adult size would be misleading.

Skull, teeth and body

The head was long, low and narrow. Many small, slightly recurved teeth had longitudinal grooves but lacked prominent serrated cutting edges. This system was poorly suited to carving large chunks of flesh and better suited to grasping small prey.

Buitreraptor had a light torso, long tail and elongated limbs. The specialised second toe carried a curved claw, though it was less massive than in large eudromaeosaurs. Long arms and a furcula do not demonstrate flight. Length was roughly 1.3–1.7 metres and mass perhaps 3–6 kilograms.

Classification and habitat

Unenlagiines are traditionally a southern branch of Dromaeosauridae. Other analyses recover them nearer early avialans. Buitreraptor securely belongs to Paraves even while this larger label remains debated. Its skeleton supplies much of what is known about the group.

Candeleros environments included river channels, floodplains and windblown sand under a seasonal climate. Small reptiles, mammals and other vertebrates provide plausible prey, but no stomach contents, coprolites or diagnostic bites reveal its diet. Leg proportions support active terrestrial movement without yielding a maximum speed.

Feathers and behaviour

No skin or feather impressions are attached to Buitreraptor. Plumage is a strong inference from paravian relationships, but wing size, colour and display cannot be specified. There is no evidence of pack hunting, aerial ability, calls, nesting or parental care.
