A small caenagnathid from Uzbekistan whose three toothless jaw fragments mark an early Asian branch while leaving most of the animal unknown.

Caenagnathasia martinsoni was a small oviraptorosaur from the Bissekty Formation of Uzbekistan. It was first known from two pairs of fused lower-jaw bones. A third jaw was described later, and several isolated vertebrae, a partial sacrum and part of a femur have been referred to the same species.

No complete skull, hand or foot has been found. The familiar bird-like silhouette in restorations is therefore mostly comparative, while the sharp toothless lower beak is supported directly by fossil bone.

The diagnostic core

Three fused dentary fragments preserve a toothless, vascularised cutting edge for a beak.

Jaw fragments from the Kyzylkum Desert

The type specimens come from Dzharakuduk in the Kyzylkum Desert. Bissekty fossils accumulated in sandy deposits of an ancient river system and are commonly isolated, so associated skeletons are rare.

Philip Currie, Stephen Godfrey and Lev Nessov named the genus in a study of Asian and North American caenagnathids. The holotype CCMGE 401/12457 and specimen CCMGE 402/12457 are mandibular symphyses, where the right and left dentaries fuse on the midline. The name combines Caenagnathidae with Asia, while martinsoni honours geologist Gerbert Martinson.

The occurrence was biogeographically important. Late Cretaceous North America had supplied many caenagnathids, whereas Asian oviraptorosaur records were dominated by oviraptorids. Caenagnathasia showed that caenagnathids occupied Central Asia by Turonian time.

The toothless cutting edge

The preserved dentaries contain no tooth sockets. Their front forms a raised sharp margin that carried a keratinous beak. Grooves and openings on the outer and inner surfaces transmitted blood vessels and nerves to that covering. The lower surface of the symphysis is expanded, and the paired bones are tightly fused.

Alexander Averianov and Hans-Dieter Sues described the third jaw, ZIN PH 2354/16, in 2015. It is smaller than either type specimen but preserves the symphysis and almost the entire right branch. Its sharp edge reinforces the assignment to C. martinsoni.

Size differences might represent growth, but there is no adequate growth series. The smallest jaw cannot simply be labelled juvenile or the largest adult without bone histology or a broader sample.

Referred vertebrae and limb material

Separate cervical and dorsal vertebrae from Bissekty show features consistent with caenagnathoids. A partial sacrum of four fused vertebrae and part of a femur have also been referred to the species. The sacrum might be juvenile because adult relatives generally incorporated more vertebrae.

These assignments are weaker than the jaws. None of the postcranial bones was articulated with a holotype, and another close oviraptorosaur could have lived in the same fauna. Shared size, provenance and comparative anatomy make the referral reasonable, but only overlapping material can test it directly.

Caenagnathasia was clearly much smaller than giant oviraptorosaurs. An exact length is unavailable. Estimates below one metre scale jaw dimensions against relatives and should not be presented as measurements of its own skeleton.

Relationships and geographic range

Caenagnathasia belongs to Caenagnathidae rather than Oviraptoridae. It was an oviraptorosaur, but not a species of Oviraptor. Analyses often place it near early branches leading toward later North American caenagnathids. Its precise node varies because most skull and skeleton characters cannot be scored.

A separate lower jaw from the Iren Dabasu Formation of Inner Mongolia has been called Caenagnathasia sp. Similarities may extend the genus eastward and later in time, but the cautious “sp.” does not identify it as C. martinsoni. The Chinese formation is younger than Bissekty.

Elmisaurus offers a useful contrast: it is a later Asian caenagnathid with informative hands and feet but only a fragmentary skull. Incisivosaurus is a more basal oviraptorosaur that still retained an extensive set of teeth.

Food, feathers and habitat

The beak rules out a small predator equipped with slicing teeth, but it does not reveal a complete diet. A sharp keratinous edge could cut vegetation or seize small food items. No gut contents, coprolites or feeding marks are associated with the genus.

Feathers are strongly inferred from its position within feathered maniraptoran theropods, although no impressions belong to Caenagnathasia itself. Their length, colour and arrangement are unknown. A head crest is even less secure because the skull roof and nasal bones have not been found.

Bissekty included channels, floodplains and waterside habitats occupied by diverse dinosaurs, crocodyliforms, turtles, fishes and mammals. Isolated bones reveal faunal composition but say almost nothing about flocking, nesting or parental care in this genus.
