Centrosaurus apertus was a short-frilled horned dinosaur from the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous Period. It lived in what is now Alberta, Canada, mainly during deposition of the Dinosaur Park Formation about 76.5–75.5 million years ago.

Adults were commonly 5–5.5 metres long and probably weighed 1.5–2.5 tonnes. A large nasal horn, small brow horns and curved ornaments near the centre of the frill distinguished the skull. Vast bonebeds make Centrosaurus one of the best-sampled ceratopsids.

How to read a dinosaur bonebed

Thousands of bones reveal population variation

Overlapping skulls and skeletons show which features recur, which change with age and which fall within individual variation.

Discovery and naming

Lawrence Lambe named Centrosaurus apertus in 1904 from skull material collected along Alberta’s Red Deer River. The genus name refers to pointed structures, not to the dinosaur being “central”. Early collecting and later systematic excavations uncovered dense accumulations containing remains of many individuals.

These sites include disarticulated bones, skull elements and partial skeletons. Because the same parts occur repeatedly, researchers can distinguish consistent anatomy from damage or individual variation. The sample also preserves young, subadult and adult animals.

Classification and valid species

Centrosaurus belongs to Centrosaurinae, the ceratopsid branch with relatively short frills and elaborate ornaments around the nose and frill margin. It gave the subfamily its name. Close relatives include Styracosaurus and later thick-nosed forms such as Pachyrhinosaurus.

C. apertus is the secure species. Several names historically assigned to the genus were later synonymised or moved. Centrosaurus brinkmani, for example, is now generally placed in Coronosaurus. Skull, horn and frill

The nasal horn varied in curvature and orientation. Small brow horn cores sat above the eyes, while the rear frill carried marginal knobs and two inward-curving hook-like processes. A living keratin covering altered the final outline of these bony cores, so the bare museum skull is not the complete external head.

Young skulls had less developed ornaments. As growth proceeded, bone was deposited and resorbed, changing the horn bases and frill margins. This helps explain why isolated juvenile material can look taxonomically different. Pathologies and unusual growths in some specimens also show that not every asymmetry defines a species.

Body size and locomotion

A deep barrel-shaped trunk was carried on four robust limbs. The hands and feet supported continuous quadrupedal movement, and powerful neck muscles balanced the large head. Length estimates of about 5–5.5 metres depend on how missing vertebrae and tail sections are restored.

Mass estimates commonly fall between 1.5 and 2.5 tonnes, with differences arising from body shape and the specimen chosen. Fossils establish a sturdy terrestrial animal but not a precise top speed. Its scale can be compared directly with other taxa in the dinosaur size tool.

Diet and ecosystem

A keratinous beak cropped plants, while batteries of replaceable teeth created long slicing surfaces. The jaw action processed fibrous vegetation efficiently. Specific menu claims remain uncertain because diagnostic stomach contents are unavailable, and local plant fossils do not prove that every herbivore ate every available species.

The Dinosaur Park landscape included rivers, floodplains, coastal lowlands and forests near the Western Interior Seaway. Hadrosaurs, ankylosaurs, other ceratopsids and tyrannosaurids shared the formation. Its rock sequence spans time, so not all listed animals formed one unchanging community.

Bonebeds, death and social behaviour

Some Centrosaurus bonebeds contain remains representing hundreds of animals, and the wider record amounts to thousands of individuals. Sedimentology and bone orientation at particular sites are consistent with mass mortality followed by transport or reworking in water. A flood is a strong explanation for some deposits, not a universal account of every site.

The number of individuals makes large aggregation highly plausible. They may have gathered seasonally, moved through the landscape together or simply been concentrated from a wider area during disaster. Fossils cannot separate these possibilities well enough to establish permanent herds, dominance structures or coordinated defence. The same caution applies whenever social behaviour is inferred from grouped bones.
