The dodo, Raphus cucullatus, was a flightless pigeon found only on Mauritius. It disappeared during the seventeenth century after people and introduced animals transformed an island ecosystem that had developed without terrestrial mammal predators.
The bird is often reduced to a symbol of stupidity and inevitable failure. Its bones tell a different story: a sturdy, mobile island pigeon with powerful legs and a specialised skull. Extinction followed rapid external change, not an anatomical inability to survive in its original environment.

Anatomical and molecular studies place the dodo within the pigeon family. Its closest living branch includes the Nicobar pigeon and related island pigeons, although no living species is its direct ancestor. The extinct Rodrigues solitaire was its closest known relative.
Ancestors able to fly reached the Mascarene region. On Mauritius, abundant ground food and the absence of native mammalian predators reduced the advantage of costly flight. Over evolutionary time the wings and breast apparatus became smaller while the pelvis and legs supported a heavier terrestrial body.
What the skeleton actually shows
The pelvis was broad and the hind limbs robust. Joints and muscle attachments do not fit the helpless waddling creature of satire. The bird could walk effectively through forest, balance its mass and use a strong beak.
Most complete anatomical reconstructions combine bones from several individuals because the richest Mare aux Songes deposit contains disarticulated remains. Proportions must account for age, sex and natural variation before a composite skeleton is treated as one average animal.
How fat was the dodo?
Early images range from relatively lean birds to extremely rounded ones. Some artists saw living dodos, while others copied paintings, worked from transported captives or emphasised unusual proportions. Captivity and seasonal fat storage may also have changed body condition.
Bone-based reconstructions support a large-bodied pigeon but do not validate every swollen museum painting. Weight estimates depend on torso volume and soft tissue. A permanent inability to move is incompatible with survival in native forest before human arrival.
Food and daily life
The deep hooked bill could crop, crush and manipulate a variety of foods. Fruits, seeds and other plant material are the strongest candidates, with invertebrates or small animal matter possible opportunistically. No complete preserved stomach provides a fixed menu.
Stories connecting the bird exclusively to one “dodo tree” are too simple. Island forests contain seasonal mosaics, and a generalist feeder need not depend on a single plant. Crop stones could aid processing, but every rounded stone found near bones is not automatically a gastrolith.
Mauritius has marked wet and dry seasons. Food availability and body condition probably changed through the year, which may explain part of the variation seen in historical images. This remains a physiological hypothesis rather than proof that every unusually rounded painting depicts seasonal fat storage.
People reach Mauritius
Dutch sailors encountered dodos around the end of the sixteenth century, although earlier visitors may have reached the island. Birds were killed for food and carried aboard ships. Contemporary comments on flavour vary, warning against one universal account.
Direct hunting alone is unlikely to explain every stage. Settlement cleared and disturbed lowland forest. Pigs, rats, macaques and other introduced animals consumed eggs, young or food and altered vegetation. These pressures acted together on a slow-breeding island bird.
When did it disappear?
The last widely accepted sighting dates to 1662. Later reports are ambiguous, copied or geographically confused. Statistical estimates can suggest survival for additional years, but they cannot turn an undocumented animal into a direct observation.
The exact final date matters less biologically than the speed of the collapse. Within decades of sustained human presence, a species that had evolved on Mauritius for a long time disappeared.
Why “stupid dodo” is a myth
Island tameness is an adaptation to an environment without familiar predators, not low intelligence. Avoidance behaviour is costly when danger is absent. The sudden arrival of armed people, dogs, pigs and rats created selection pressures too quickly for slow reproduction and evolution to answer.
The caricature also confuses flightlessness with inferiority. Many island birds lose flight successfully. The disaster was the rapid restructuring of habitat and food webs, not the mere presence of small wings.
Names, specimens and reconstruction
Historical names and descriptions were inconsistent, while no complete preserved skin survives. Researchers combine bones, written observations, paintings and molecular evidence, judging each by its origin. A copied seventeenth-century image cannot outweigh measured anatomy.
