The great auk, Pinguinus impennis, was a large flightless seabird of the North Atlantic. It belonged to the auk family, not to the southern penguin lineage. Europeans later applied the name penguin to unrelated southern birds because their upright shape and wing-propelled diving resembled the great auk.

Unlike most prehistoric animals, the species is known from skins, complete skeletons, eggs, preserved organs, archaeological bones, historical descriptions and DNA. This unusually rich record shows both how the bird lived and how repeated human exploitation drove it towards extinction.

Museum skins, skeletons, organs and eggs preserve much more than a typical fossil taxon.

An auk, not a penguin

Great auks and modern penguins evolved flightless marine bodies independently. Both used short wings to generate thrust underwater and both had dense insulating plumage. Their similarities are convergence produced by the same physical demands, not evidence of close kinship.

The great auk stood roughly 75–85 centimetres tall. Its heavy body, narrow wings and strong legs made aerial flight impossible but supported rapid underwater pursuit. The bill was deep and grooved, well suited to gripping fish.

Life in the North Atlantic

The species ranged across cold and temperate North Atlantic waters. Adults spent much of the year at sea and came ashore to breed on a limited set of remote rocky islands. A usable colony needed easy access from the sea, low terrestrial predation and enough flat rock for dense nesting.

Pairs normally produced one large egg placed directly on bare rock. That low reproductive output made recovery slow after adults and eggs were removed. Chicks and parental care are described imperfectly, so the exact breeding calendar varied between colonies and remains partly uncertain.

Swimming and diet

Compressed wings worked as hydrofoils, while the legs helped steer. The bird was clumsy on land compared with its control underwater. Fish were the principal food, although exact prey changed with region and season.

Wing-propelled diving explains the superficial resemblance to penguins. It does not reveal a precise maximum depth or speed. Those values require living measurements that are impossible after extinction.

Thousands of years of human contact

Great auk bones occur in prehistoric coastal sites, demonstrating a long history of human use. Early hunting did not immediately eliminate the species across its range. Pressure intensified from the sixteenth century as crews visited breeding islands for fresh meat, bait, oil and feathers.

Colonies were exceptionally vulnerable because adults could not fly away and gathered in predictable places. People could drive or carry many birds at once. Eggs were also collected, removing the next generation while reproductive adults were killed.

From commodity to collectors' rarity

As colonies vanished, the species became valuable to museums and private collectors. This changed the motive but not the result: surviving birds and eggs were pursued precisely because they had become rare. Protection came late and was difficult to enforce on isolated islands.

The best documented final event occurred on Eldey, Iceland, in June 1844. Three men landed on the rock, killed the last known breeding pair and broke their egg during the struggle. Later sightings have been reported, but none supplies equivalent physical documentation.

What genetics says about the decline

A study of 41 mitochondrial genomes from across the former range found high diversity and no signal requiring a long natural collapse before intensive hunting. Population models showed that sustained removal of adults and eggs could extinguish even a large, genetically healthy population.

Mitochondrial DNA represents maternal lineages rather than the whole genome, so it cannot answer every demographic question. Together with historical and archaeological evidence, however, it rejects the claim that people merely finished a species already doomed by ancient genetic weakness.

Museum specimens and continuing research

Skins and skeletons are distributed among museums, while preserved organs offer rare molecular material. DNA has linked particular tissues with mounted birds and clarified collection histories. Egg markings vary naturally, which is why one unusual pattern does not necessarily indicate a separate population.
