Lambeosaurus was a large herbivorous hadrosaurid from Late Cretaceous Alberta, Canada. Its best fossils come from the Dinosaur Park Formation, broadly about 76–74 million years old. It belonged to Lambeosaurinae, the hadrosaur branch whose nasal bones formed hollow cranial crests.
Adults were generally 7–9 metres long. The familiar crest combined a tall blade above the eyes with a narrower rear projection, giving the skull a hatchet-like profile. Fossils preserve the bony framework and internal passages, not the colour or complete outer contour.

Four ways to test a crest reconstruction
The tall blade and rear projection are real bony structures. Keratin and other soft tissues could alter their living outline.
Internal passages were part of respiration and could affect resonance. They were not a reservoir for underwater breathing.
The crest began low and enlarged during maturity. Growth can explain some skulls once assigned separate names.
Species recognition and maturity display are plausible, but colour, courtship movements and sex differences are not directly preserved.
Discovery and naming
Lawrence Lambe described Canadian hadrosaur skull material in the early twentieth century, initially placing it in Trachodon and then Stephanosaurus. William Parks established Lambeosaurus in 1923, honouring Lambe. Revisions later separated species based on better skulls and their positions within the rock sequence.
This history explains why older museum labels and books contain several abandoned combinations. Fragmentary skulls, crushing and age-related crest change made early naming especially difficult. A name is most stable when it rests on diagnostic overlapping material rather than one dramatic outline.
Recognised species
L. lambei is the type and most familiar species. Adult skulls bear the characteristic tall front portion and backward-pointing process. L. magnicristatus had a larger, more rounded crest and is known from more limited material. Both are retained when their full combinations of skull features are compared.

Crest anatomy and possible sound
The crest was built mainly from expanded premaxillary and nasal bones. Passages led from the nostrils into the structure and back toward the respiratory tract. Its outer shape therefore reorganised the nose rather than adding a solid horn on top of the head.
Air moving through different passage lengths would have resonated at different frequencies. Models support a capacity to modify low calls, but the precise voice cannot be reconstructed because vocal soft tissues and behaviour are missing. The crest may also have helped individuals recognise species or maturity. These functions could coexist.
Comparing crested hadrosaurs
Parasaurolophus carried a long tubular crest with extended internal loops. Corythosaurus had a rounded helmet-like crest. Lambeosaurus combined a high blade with a rear prong, while uncrested saurolophines used different bony and soft-tissue displays. These distinctions reflect related branches, not male and female forms of one species.
Juveniles of each lambeosaurine can look more alike because their adult ornaments have not developed. This is why similarly mature skulls and several anatomical regions should be compared before assigning a specimen.
Body size and movement
The body was deep, with powerful hind limbs, a long balancing tail and forelimbs able to bear weight. Trackway and skeletal evidence across hadrosaurs support quadrupedal walking and the ability to rise or move bipedally. The old permanently upright, tail-dragging pose is not supported.

Beak, teeth and diet
A broad keratin-covered beak cropped vegetation. Behind it, dental batteries contained stacked replacement teeth, only a subset of which formed the active surface. Repeated wear produced durable cutting and crushing faces.
Jaw movement allowed substantial oral processing but was not identical to mammalian chewing. The animal was certainly herbivorous; exact plant preferences and seasonal diets remain uncertain without securely identified gut contents.
Environment, skin and social claims
Dinosaur Park sediments formed in river channels, floodplains and coastal lowlands near the Western Interior Seaway. Other hadrosaurs, ceratopsids, armoured dinosaurs and tyrannosaurids occupied the region at overlapping times.
Hadrosaur skin impressions support a scaled body, but material confidently assigned to each species does not reveal a complete colour pattern. Group living is plausible from the broader hadrosaur record, yet the fossils of Lambeosaurus do not establish permanent herds, fixed family roles or coordinated calls.
