Nuthetes destructor is a small carnivorous dinosaur known mainly from part of a lower jaw and isolated teeth from Dorset, England. Richard Owen named it in 1854, before modern theropod classification existed. Since then it has been called a lizard, a juvenile megalosaur and an early dromaeosaurid. The safest present description is a small theropod of uncertain position.

Where does the evidence stop?
DORCM G 913 is the front portion of a small left dentary from the Purbeck deposits.
Sharp recurved crowns with cutting serrations show a diet that included animal tissue.
Tooth details resemble dromaeosaurids but can overlap with other small coelurosaurs.
No associated vertebra, limb, specialised second-toe claw, tail or feather impression defines the body.
The Purbeck jaw
The holotype DORCM G 913 is the anterior portion of a left dentary. It comes from the upper Lulworth Formation in the Purbeck Group, probably from freshwater marl or cherty beds of Berriasian age. A second left jaw fragment, NHMUK PV OR 48207, and collections of isolated teeth were later attributed to the genus.
Those referrals carry different levels of confidence. Teeth of small predatory dinosaurs can resemble one another, while crowns also change shape along a single jaw. Similar age and locality do not by themselves identify an isolated tooth.
From lizard to possible dromaeosaurid
Owen originally interpreted the fossil under a very different nineteenth-century framework. Later authors treated it as a young megalosaur. A twenty-first-century redescription emphasised the fine serrations and the ratio between denticles on the front and rear cutting edges, which resembled dromaeosaurid teeth.
The resemblance led to Nuthetes being presented as an early member of Dromaeosauridae. It is not decisive. European teeth once labelled dromaeosaurid may in some cases represent other coelurosaurs, including proceratosaurid tyrannosauroids. Comparison with Dromaeosaurus demonstrates a shared cutting design, not necessarily close ancestry.
What the fossil says about feeding
The dentary carried pointed, recurved crowns with serrated edges. Unlike the diet of many fragmentary taxa, carnivory is therefore a direct conclusion. The teeth cut animal tissue, but they cannot distinguish active hunting from scavenging or identify particular prey.
The small jaw may come from a juvenile. If so, its dimensions do not establish adult size. No growth series links it to a larger form, so enlarging the jaw by an assumed factor would only create a model-dependent number.
Early Cretaceous Dorset
The Purbeck deposits formed in a shifting network of freshwater and brackish lagoons, lakes and wetlands. They preserve small vertebrates, insects and plants, often as disarticulated remains. Water transport helps explain why isolated theropod teeth are more common than complete skeletons.
Fossils found in the same deposits describe a community, not a specific food web. Nuthetes cannot be assigned a named prey species simply because both occur in Purbeck rocks.
Why the old name remains useful
Nuthetes retains a historical name-bearing specimen and the species N. destructor. A validly established name, however, does not guarantee a stable family placement. A modern anatomical review can test whether the dentary contains a unique combination of features, while an associated skull or skeleton would be needed for confident proportions.
Artwork often gives Nuthetes the feathers, long tail and raised foot claw of a small dromaeosaurid. Those are transparent comparative choices, not discoveries from the fossil. It should not be drawn as a miniature copy of either Dromaeosaurus or another better-known coelurosaur without that caveat.
