Canadian and Alaskan bonebeds reveal three species whose youthful nasal horns remodelled into the rough, thick bosses of adults.

Pachyrhinosaurus was a large centrosaurine ceratopsid from Late Cretaceous northern North America. Its fossils occur in Alberta, Canada, and on Alaska’s North Slope, spanning roughly 73.3–68.5 million years ago. Three species are recognised: P. canadensis, P. lakustai and P. perotorum.

Adults usually measured about 5–7 metres and weighed roughly 2–4 tonnes. Instead of a long nasal horn core, the mature skull carried a massive roughened boss. Growth series show that this structure formed through striking remodelling of more horn-like nasal anatomy in younger animals.

From bony boss to living animal

The nose transformed rather than simply enlarging

Juvenile nasal bones bore separate horn-like structures. With maturity they fused, thickened and remodelled into a broad adult boss.

Discovery and naming

Charles Mortram Sternberg named Pachyrhinosaurus canadensis in 1950 from incomplete skulls found near Alberta’s Little Bow River in 1945 and 1946. The unusual thick nasal bones initially prompted him to create a separate family. Later discoveries showed that the animal belongs within Centrosaurinae.

Teacher Al Lakusta discovered the rich Pipestone Creek site in western Alberta in 1972. Thousands of bones and multiple skulls from animals of different ages became the basis for P. lakustai, named in 2008. Material from the Kikak-Tegoseak quarry in Alaska’s Prince Creek Formation supported P. perotorum in 2012.

Three recognised species

P. canadensis comes chiefly from the St Mary River and Horseshoe Canyon formations. In mature skulls, the nasal and brow bosses approached one another. P. lakustai, best known from the approximately 73.3-million-year-old Pipestone Creek bonebed, had a shorter nasal boss separated more clearly from the brow structures and a variable set of frill ornaments.

P. perotorum lived later, about 70–68.5 million years ago, in Alaska’s Prince Creek Formation. Its raised snout profile and combination of boss and frill traits distinguish it. A 2019 revision corrected a mistaken arrangement of pieces in the holotype frill while retaining the species on other diagnostic features. This is how new preparation can alter reconstruction without erasing a valid name.

Classification and relationships

The genus belongs to Pachyrhinosaurini within Centrosaurinae, close to Achelousaurus and other thick-nosed forms. Analyses usually recover the three named species as a natural genus, but disagree over their exact branching order. The result should be shown as an evolving hypothesis rather than one fixed ladder.

A roughly 75.1-million-year-old skull and skeleton from the Dinosaur Park Formation show a more primitive combination of features and may lie close to the genus. The boss, frill and changing skull

The adult nasal boss was living bone covered by keratin, not a bare callus. Its rough surface records that covering, while the soft outer contour remains unknown. Juvenile specimens show paired horn-like structures that later fused and remodelled. Frill horns and marginal processes also changed with age and varied among adults.

Display, species recognition, maturity signalling and physical contact are all plausible roles. Regular head-on ramming is not demonstrated by shape alone. Researchers must distinguish injury patterns compatible with combat from ordinary remodelling, disease and damage after burial.

Body size, movement and feeding

The deep trunk stood on four short, robust limbs, and a strong neck supported the skull. Most adults are reconstructed at 5–7 metres and 2–4 tonnes. Upper estimates near 7–8 metres depend on associating incomplete bones and restoring missing tails, so they should not replace the more defensible range. A keratinous beak cropped vegetation, while dental batteries supplied continuously replaced slicing teeth. The apparatus shows herbivory and effective oral processing. No diagnostic stomach contents establish favourite plants or feeding height.

Bonebeds and northern environments

Published work on Pipestone Creek describes about 2,500 bones and 15 skulls of varying completeness, with a minimum of at least 27 individuals based on paired elements. Juveniles, subadults and adults occur together. The deposit demonstrates a large multi-age association at death or during accumulation, but water could have moved and mixed carcasses.

Alaskan P. perotorum inhabited high latitudes with strong seasonal changes in daylight. The Prince Creek landscape included rivers, floodplains and wooded vegetation and was not a modern frozen tundra. Cooler conditions and winter darkness were real ecological pressures, yet fossils do not prove annual long-distance migration. High-latitude residence, seasonal movement and permanent residency are separate claims.
