A body fossil preserves part of an organism, such as bone, tooth, shell or wood. A trace fossil records activity rather than the body itself, for example a footprint, trackway, burrow, bite mark or coprolite.
Boundaries are calibrated from radiometric dates, stratigraphic markers and correlated rock sections. More precise measurements can move a boundary slightly, while decimals preserve the agreed numerical estimate instead of rounding away useful precision.
