Patagotitan was a giant herbivorous titanosaur from what is now Argentine Patagonia. It lived about 101.6 million years ago, during the late Albian stage of the Early Cretaceous Period. Bones from at least six similarly sized animals were recovered at La Flecha ranch in Chubut Province.
The material is substantially more informative than that of many other supergiant sauropods. Overlapping vertebrae and limb bones reveal the trunk and appendicular skeleton in detail. Yet no complete individual exists, and major parts of the skull, neck, tail, hands and feet remain unknown.

How secure is the giant reconstruction?
Repeated bones are similar in shape and size, allowing several partial skeletons from one locality to fill anatomical gaps without claiming one complete body.
Limb circumference and three-dimensional body volumes yield broad, overlapping results. Missing neck and tail sections prevent one exact length.
Vertebrae, ribs, shoulder, pelvis and limb bones are informative. The head is represented only by an isolated tooth.
Three bone-bearing levels record separate events. Returning to one area is plausible, while permanent herd structure is not demonstrated.
Name, discovery and geological setting
The name combines Patagonia with “titan”, while mayorum honours the Mayo family, owners of La Flecha ranch, who supported the fieldwork. Ranch worker Aurelio Hernández noticed a huge bone in the early 2010s and alerted the Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio. Several excavation seasons produced a large collection.
José Luis Carballido and colleagues named the genus and species in 2017. The fossils came from the upper Cerro Barcino Formation, commonly identified more narrowly with the Cerro Castaño Member. Radiometric dating of volcanic material fixed the layer near 101.62 million years old.
Classification and species
Patagotitan unquestionably belongs to Titanosauria, the diverse Cretaceous radiation of sauropods. Analyses commonly place it among South American lognkosaurs and colossosaurs, near other enormous forms such as Argentinosaurus and Puertasaurus. The order of branching varies with definitions and data matrices, so the broad titanosaur assignment is firmer than any one close-relative pairing.
Only P. mayorum is recognised. Researchers combined the La Flecha sauropod bones under one name because repeated elements are anatomically similar, vary little in size and sometimes share diagnostic features. That choice is better supported than naming every partial skeleton separately, but it still interprets a multi-event locality.
What was actually found
The holotype MPEF-PV 3400 represents one animal. It includes three neck vertebrae, seven back vertebrae, six front tail vertebrae, chevrons, ribs, both sternal plates, a right shoulder complex, both pubic bones and two femora. For a supergiant titanosaur, this is an unusually informative set, though far from complete.
A second associated skeleton, MPEF-PV 3399, preserves six rear neck vertebrae, four back vertebrae, seventeen tail vertebrae, ribs, chevrons, left forearm bones, pelvic pieces and a left femur. Paratypes add an isolated tooth, vertebrae, upper arm and thigh bones and incomplete fibulae. Together they establish a minimum of six individuals.
Museum mounts combine casts from several animals with modelled pieces based on related titanosaurs. They communicate overall scale, but they are not replicas of a single complete skeleton.
Length and mass are ranges
Longer reconstructions approach 37 metres, while more compact models are near 31 metres. The difference comes largely from restoring a skull, continuous neck and full tail that were never found. Selecting the proportions of a close relative can add or remove several metres.
An early estimate based on the circumference of weight-bearing limb bones produced about 69 tonnes with wide statistical uncertainty. Volumetric models ranged from roughly 45 to 77 tonnes as researchers changed the amount of soft tissue. A revised equation yielded a central figure near 57 tonnes and a broad interval around 42–71 tonnes.
The suitable upper arm and thigh used for some calculations do not come from one skeleton, although they belong to similar-sized animals at the same locality. A sensible summary is therefore roughly 50–60 tonnes for a representative estimate, not a scale reading. The dinosaur size comparison shows why ranges are essential.
Patagotitan was certainly among the largest land animals known. A unique champion cannot be proved because Argentinosaurus, Puertasaurus and other candidates preserve different and incomplete body regions, while their estimated ranges overlap.
Skeleton and movement
The body plan combined a relatively small head, long neck, massive trunk, four columnar limbs and a long tail. Back vertebrae had tall neural spines and complex supporting laminae. An accessory hyposphene-hypantrum joint between two vertebrae may have reinforced the trunk near the shoulders.
Front tail vertebrae had broad neural spines and extensive muscle attachments, indicating a powerful tail. They do not reveal a measured strike force or one particular behaviour. A femur about 2.4 metres long illustrates the load carried by the limbs. No secure trackway records maximum speed, so both sprinting giants and nearly immobile animals are exaggerations.
Feeding, growth and habitat
The isolated tooth and sauropod relationships establish herbivory, but no stomach contents or confidently assigned droppings identify the plants. A long neck enlarged the feeding envelope, while its habitual angle remains uncertain because the complete series of neck vertebrae is missing. Bone tissue shows young adults whose growth had slowed but may not have stopped entirely. This does not prove that unknown fully mature animals were dramatically larger. Histology separates growth stages more reliably than it predicts a missing maximum.
The animals were buried on a river floodplain. Bones occur in three closely spaced layers rather than one simultaneous mass-death surface, and major transport was limited. The animals probably died near the burial area during separate events. Repeated presence could indicate site fidelity, water or forage attraction, or social behaviour. It does not by itself demonstrate a permanent herd.
