Struthiomimus

A long-legged Alberta ornithomimid built for efficient running, but not a measured 80 km/h sprinter or a securely known specialist eater.

Struthiomimus was a genus of slender toothless theropods in Ornithomimidae. Secure material comes mainly from Late Cretaceous Alberta. The type species, S. altus, lived during the late Campanian, around 76–74 million years ago, while some younger fossils traditionally placed in the genus require revision.

Adults reached about 4–4.5 metres and probably 100–180 kilograms. A small beaked head, long neck, light trunk, three-clawed hands and elongated hind limbs created the familiar “ostrich dinosaur” outline. The comparison is useful for locomotion, not ancestry, diet or an exact running speed.

Which claims are secure?

Several skeletons preserve most of the spine and limbs, while no complete skull of S. altus is known.

Name and history of study

Struthiomimus means “ostrich mimic”. The comparison reflects a small head, long neck and legs, a three-toed weight-bearing foot and a light body. The species name altus, “high”, refers to the tall-legged stance. The animal was neither an ostrich nor its direct ancestor.

Lawrence Lambe described the type material in 1902 as Ornithomimus altus. It was an incomplete postcranial skeleton from Alberta. Henry Fairfield Osborn created the genus Struthiomimus in 1917, drawing heavily on the fuller AMNH 5339 found by an American Museum of Natural History expedition.

AMNH 5339 retained much of the spine, limbs and girdles but had an incomplete skull. Early museum mounts filled missing regions from Ornithomimus and other relatives. Through the twentieth century, fossils of different ages from Canada and the United States were assigned to Struthiomimus. Later work showed that very similar ornithomimids require combinations of cranial, hand, pelvic and foot characters for reliable separation.

Classification and species

Struthiomimus belongs to Ornithomimosauria, a coelurosaur branch within Theropoda. More specifically, it is an ornithomimid, one of the derived toothless forms with long legs and an arctometatarsal foot. The broader placement can be followed through the dinosaur family tree.

The genus differs from Ornithomimus in proportions of the arms, hands, pelvis and legs. These distinctions become difficult to use when a skeleton lacks the relevant bones. The secure species is S. altus, chiefly from the Dinosaur Park Formation and nearby late Campanian beds.

Some younger Horseshoe Canyon skeletons were traditionally called S. altus. Their geological separation and anatomical differences allow the possibility of another species or genus. S. sedens began as Ornithomimus sedens, named by Marsh in 1892 from an incomplete Lance Formation skeleton in Wyoming. Its fragmentary material has not been compared well enough for an uncontested assignment.

The old combinations S. brevetertius and S. samueli concern fossils later assigned to Dromiceiomimus or Ornithomimus. They should not be counted automatically as modern Struthiomimus species.

Fossil material

Known material includes partial skulls and lower jaws, neck, trunk and tail vertebrae, ribs, shoulder bones, long forelimbs and three-fingered hands, pelves, almost complete hind limbs, and articulated or partly articulated skeletons.

No complete S. altus skull is known. Its outline is reconstructed from fragments and better-preserved close relatives. Several famous mounts combine real bones from one animal with mirrored casts or parts restored comparatively. A visually complete museum skeleton is therefore not the same as one fully articulated fossil.

No undisputed Struthiomimus specimen has published feather impressions. Plumage is inferred from direct finds in close ornithomimids. The distinction matters: a feathered body is strongly supported by relationship, but exact density, arm feathers, tail fan and colour remain unpreserved for this genus.

Size and body construction

Adult length was about 4–4.5 metres, with mass estimates around 100–180 kilograms. The neck and tail account for much of that length; the trunk itself was compact. Values change with the completeness and identity of each skeleton.

The skeleton combined hollow bones, an elongated flexible neck, light head, short trunk, long tail, elongated lower legs and metatarsus, and relatively large arms. The tail was held above the ground as a counterweight. Old upright mounts with a dragging tail are anatomically outdated.

The head was small and elongated. Adult jaws lacked teeth and supported a keratinous beak whose complete living outline did not fossilise. Toothlessness alone says little about diet because modern toothless birds include herbivores, omnivores and predators.

Hands, feet and locomotion

The arms were longer and more robust than in many other ornithomimids. Three fingers ended in curved claws and could flex, but there was no opposable thumb and no dromaeosaur-like predatory hand. Pulling branches, collecting food, manipulating available objects, defence, display or nest-related use are all possible; tearing apart large prey is unsupported.

The hind limbs were long and slender, especially the tibia and metatarsus. Three main toes carried the animal. The upper third metatarsal was pinched between its neighbours, forming an arctometatarsus that distributed stress and stabilised the foot during running.

Struthiomimus was unquestionably an effective runner. Exact popular figures of 70–80 km/h are not measurements. They depend on reconstructed muscle power, stride, body mass and ground conditions, and no trackway records this genus at maximum speed.

Feathers and external appearance

Close Alberta ornithomimids preserve filamentous feathers in juveniles and adults, plus longer forearm feathers in mature individuals. This makes a soft feather covering highly probable for Struthiomimus. Adult arms may also have carried elongated structures.

Those longer feathers could have assisted display, shielding a clutch or thermal control. None of these functions is demonstrated for S. altus, and flight was impossible. Colour, local feather length, the covering of the lower legs and a tail fan remain unknown.

Diet and habitat

Plants, soft shoots, seeds and fruits may have formed much of the diet. Insects, small vertebrates and other accessible items could have supplemented it. A toothless beak, long arms, possible gastrolith use among relatives and generally weaker jaws support an important plant component, but Struthiomimus lacks direct gut contents, coprolites or diagnostic bite traces.

It should not be labelled a strict predator, strict herbivore or filter feeder. Seasonal omnivory is a reasonable working model, not a preserved fact.

The main S. altus fossils come from the Dinosaur Park Formation in Alberta, part of a warm coastal plain beside the Western Interior Seaway during the Late Cretaceous. Rivers, floodplains, forests, wetlands and open patches supported centrosaurines, hadrosaurs, ankylosaurs and tyrannosaurids. Sharing a formation does not prove direct interaction with each named species.

Behaviour and reconstruction limits

There is no direct evidence for permanent herds, coordinated hunting, nests specifically belonging to Struthiomimus, clutch size, parental care, sexual differences, seasonal migration or calls. Temporary gatherings near food and water are plausible. Long adult feathers could have supported age-related display, but not a known courtship dance.

The common myths follow from taking a useful analogy too far. The animal did not have four widely spread weight-bearing toes, did not run at a measured 80 km/h, was not a specialised large-prey killer and was probably not bare-skinned. It was also not the name for every North American ostrich-like dinosaur.
