Fragmentary vertebrae record a French maniraptoran whose identity remains difficult to compare.

Variraptor mechinorum was named for fragmentary maniraptoran bones from southern France. Its holotype is a connected section of the back and sacrum, while several limb and vertebral elements were referred from other localities. A dromaeosaurid identity is plausible, but the genus remains difficult to diagnose and compare.

What belongs to Variraptor?

Connected and diagnostic

A posterior dorsal vertebra joins a sacrum made from five fused vertebrae.

Discovery and name

The holotype was found at La Bastide Neuve near Fox-Amphoux in the Var department. Jean Le Loeuff and Eric Buffetaut named it in 1998. Variraptor means “robber from Var”, while the species honours Patrick and Annie Méchin, who collected the material and donated the holotype to the Dinosauria museum at Espéraza.

The fossils come from the Grès à Reptiles Formation and date to the late Campanian or early Maastrichtian. Other bones assigned to the species came from several southern French sites, a fact that makes their common identity less secure than the connected holotype.

Vertebrae and referred material

The type comprises posterior dorsal vertebra MDE-D168 and sacrum MDE-D169, which contains five fused vertebrae. The original diagnosis noted deep cavities on transitional vertebrae, accessory joints between neural arches and shortening of the vertebral bodies towards the rear of the back. A first tail vertebra had a trapezoidal body and wing-like transverse processes.

A right humerus, a neck-to-back transitional vertebra, a sacrocaudal vertebra and a femur were referred to Variraptor. The humerus carries a developed deltopectoral crest for arm musculature, but it does not by itself reveal how the forelimb was used. No semilunate wrist bone, feather impression or enlarged second-toe claw has been found with the genus.

Dromaeosaurid identity

The describers placed Variraptor in Dromaeosauridae. Several vertebral features and the referred humerus are compatible with that group, but many also occur more widely among maniraptorans. Without the skull, foot and most of the shoulder girdle, its position depends heavily on how scattered bones are interpreted.

A life reconstruction can reasonably use the broad feathered body plan seen in dromaeosaur relatives such as Dromaeosaurus and Velociraptor. It cannot present their skull shape, sickle claw or exact limb proportions as fossils of Variraptor itself.

Could it be Pyroraptor?

Pyroraptor, named from another southern French assemblage in 2000, is diagnosed mainly from foot material. Variraptor is diagnosed from the back and sacrum. Their type specimens therefore preserve almost no matching bones, which prevents a direct test of whether they represent the same animal.

Some researchers have proposed synonymy, while others defended Variraptor using vertebral, sacral and referred pelvic traits. Neither a confident merger nor a fully secure separation follows from the present material. Finding associated skeletons with overlapping vertebrae and feet would make the comparison far stronger.

Size, diet and island setting

Vertebral and limb dimensions suggest a small or medium-sized theropod, often described as roughly human-sized in total length. That phrase indicates scale, not a precise measurement. A missing skull, tail and articulated legs prevent a dependable total length or mass estimate.

Late Cretaceous Europe was an archipelago containing island faunas of small theropods, sauropods and ornithischians. Variraptor documents a maniraptoran presence, but its scattered bones cannot reconstruct one food web. Teeth and gut contents are unknown, so carnivory and possible small prey are inferred from relatives. Pack hunting, climbing ability and exact speed are unsupported.
