What can the fossils tell us?

The genus was named from the Vetluga basin

Several old species assignments changed after new skull comparisons.

Wetlugasaurus was an Early Triassic temnospondyl of eastern Europe. Its flat skull and numerous teeth belonged to an aquatic predator living in rivers and floodplain water bodies soon after the end-Permian mass extinction. Species are known from material of unequal completeness, so their size and appearance cannot be compressed into one universal reconstruction.

A name from the Vetluga River

Anatoly Ryabinin described the genus in 1930 from Early Triassic deposits studied in the Vetluga basin. W. angustifrons became the type species. Additional species and fragments from other eastern European localities were assigned later.

The taxonomic history is complicated. New skulls prompted reassessment of names once included in Wetlugasaurus, and material called W. samarensis has been associated with other genera. An unqualified historical species list would therefore overstate certainty.

Skull and prey capture

The skull was broad and flattened, with orbits on its upper surface. Small conical teeth lined the jaw margins, while larger palatal teeth helped retain slippery prey. This construction is typical of an aquatic ambush predator.

The animal could wait in shallow water with eyes near the surface and seize fish through rapid mouth opening. That is a functional reconstruction from anatomy, not observed behaviour. No unambiguous stomach contents or bite traces establish a precise diet.

Contemporary Benthosuchus belonged to another temnospondyl lineage and differed in skull details. Similar aquatic roles did not make them one genus.

Size without transfer between species

Individual skulls measure several tens of centimetres. Total body length is estimated by applying proportions from better-known relatives. Popular figures from about one metre to more than two can refer to different species, individuals and reconstruction methods.

It is safer to describe a medium to large aquatic predator within its fauna. No complete articulated skeleton measures trunk and tail precisely, and juveniles could differ in proportion from adults.

Recovery after the great extinction

Wetlugasaurus lived a geologically short interval after the Permian-Triassic crisis while terrestrial and freshwater communities were reorganising. Early assemblages contained few large specialised predators; temnospondyl diversity then increased.

Species succession helps correlate regional Early Triassic rocks. A “Wetlugasaurus fauna” is a vertebrate assemblage of an interval, not a herd. Changes from W. angustifrons to W. malachovi help distinguish stages of recovery, although new finds can refine the boundaries.

These rivers were shifting channels, floodplains and temporary pools rather than stable modern waterways. Drying forced a predominantly aquatic predator to move or die. Brief emergence is possible, but a massive head and relatively weak limbs do not indicate long terrestrial travel.

What the illustration adds

Skull shape, eye position and teeth come from bone. Trunk contour, tail, colour and skin folds are restored from relatives and hydrodynamic needs. External gills in an adult are not demonstrated. Reproduction, clutch size and parental care remain unknown.

Within the catalogue, the genus matters for its dated role in the recovery of eastern European river communities rather than a record size.
