What can the fossils tell us?
The dinosaur bones were later separated as Paranthodon.

Anthodon serrarius was a small pareiasaur from the Late Permian Karoo Basin of South Africa. It combined a broad ornamented skull, serrated plant-processing teeth and numerous dermal osteoderms. Bone histology shows that at least one small individual had reached skeletal maturity, supporting evolutionary dwarfing rather than a collection composed only of juveniles.
A historically mixed name
Richard Owen named Anthodon in 1876 from fossils he believed belonged together. The sample actually mixed Permian pareiasaur bones with much younger Cretaceous dinosaur material. Later work separated the dinosaur fossils, which became Paranthodon.
The similar names still create confusion, but the animals were not close relatives and did not live at the same time. Anthodon is a pareiasaurian parareptile; Paranthodon is an armoured dinosaur.
Skull and teeth
The skull was short, broad and externally ornamented. Bony bosses developed around parts of the cheek and skull roof, although they were less extravagant than in some larger pareiasaurs. Jaw construction was suited to repeated cropping and processing rather than seizing mobile prey.
The broad crowns carried serrations that inspired a comparison with a flower and the genus name. They support herbivory, but no preserved stomach contents identify a particular fern, seed plant or other food. Tooth shape describes mechanical capability before it describes a menu.
Small adult, not merely young
Anthodon belongs to Pumiliopareiasauria, a group of unusually small pareiasaurs. Researchers sectioned a femur and fibula of specimen SAM-PK-10074 to study microscopic growth. The tissue and slowing growth indicated a mature or nearly mature individual.
This evidence is stronger than judging age from body dimensions alone. It shows that compact size was a genuine adult condition. Exact mass remains difficult because the skeleton is incomplete and broad-bodied reptiles cannot be scaled reliably from length alone.
Osteoderms and body reconstruction
Numerous bony plates formed within the skin. They probably strengthened and protected the back, but did not create a rigid shell like that of a turtle. Their arrangement and thickness should be reconstructed from the actual material rather than compared automatically with an armadillo.
The limbs supported a low, broad quadruped. Walking speed, defensive posture and herd behaviour are not preserved. A cautious reconstruction can show a heavily built terrestrial herbivore without turning every bony plate into evidence of a particular response to predators.
Karoo environment and relationships
Late Permian Karoo floodplains supported diverse herbivores and predators before the end-Permian crisis. Anthodon probably fed close to the ground. Its compact body placed it in a different size class from the largest pareiasaurs.
Analyses commonly associate it with Pumiliopareia and other small forms. The catalogue also includes Arganaceras, a Moroccan pareiasaur known far more securely from the skull than from the body.
