Azendohsaurus was a robust plant-eating archosauromorph of the Triassic. Its leaf-shaped serrated teeth first made it look like an early herbivorous dinosaur. Much richer skeletons from Madagascar later revealed a different body plan and placed it in Allokotosauria, an extinct branch outside Archosauria.
From Moroccan teeth to Madagascar skeletons
The first material was found near Azendoh in Morocco and named from jaws and teeth. With little of the skeleton available, their similarity to early sauropodomorph teeth encouraged a dinosaur interpretation. That identification was reasonable for the evidence then known, but it did not survive better fossils.
In Madagascar, the Makay Formation yielded several individuals of Azendohsaurus madagaskarensis. The collection includes articulated skulls, jaws, vertebrae, girdles and limb bones, altogether roughly 300 elements. Specimen UA 7-20-99-653 preserves an especially informative skull.
Skull and feeding apparatus
The skull was deep and relatively short. Serrated, lance-shaped teeth lined the jaw margins, and additional teeth occurred on the palate. Jaw construction and tooth replacement support regular processing of vegetation rather than occasional plant consumption by a predator.
Similar crowns appeared independently in several reptile lineages. Teeth alone had pulled the Moroccan animal towards dinosaurs, whereas the palate, braincase and rest of the skeleton reveal broader archosauromorph relationships. Azendohsaurus is therefore a strong example of convergence.
Neck, trunk and limbs
The neck was long and strongly muscled. The trunk was broad, deep and supported by a substantial rib cage, while the tail was relatively short. Limbs were stout and held the animal as a heavy quadruped rather than a light bipedal runner.
Large curved claws occurred on the hands. They may have assisted in pulling vegetation, defence or digging, but their shape alone cannot select one behaviour. They should not be treated as predatory weapons simply because they look formidable.
Relationships
Detailed skull and postcranial studies place the genus among allokotosaurs, close to animals such as trilophosaurids rather than among dinosaurs. Allokotosaurs were part of the wider archosauromorph radiation that also produced the lineage leading to crocodilians, pterosaurs and dinosaurs.
This position explains why some features look broadly archosaur-like while the complete character combination is distinct. In the other fossil reptile catalogue, it stands beside Agnosphitys, whose fragmentary hip leaves a much less stable classification.
Habitat and daily life
The Makay Formation records river channels, floodplains and seasonal continental environments. A large herbivore could browse within this mosaic, but no fossil records a preferred plant species, herd structure or seasonal migration.
Tooth form, a capacious trunk and robust jaw machinery directly support herbivory. Long-necked browsing height can be estimated from the skeleton. Colour, skin texture, vocalisation, parental care and social behaviour remain unknown.
