Eremotherium was among the largest ground sloths of the Pleistocene. Its fossils occur from the southern United States through Mexico and Central America to Brazil. This broad distribution joined tropical and subtropical populations that did not necessarily experience the same climate or eat the same plants.
The best-known species is E. laurillardi. An earlier Florida form, E. eomigrans, differed in the hand among other features. Similar skulls and teeth make species limits difficult when limb bones are missing.

What can the fossils tell us?
The body could rise to reach vegetation or defend itself without making upright walking the normal gait.
Functional digits and large claws are preserved, while the feet bore weight along their outer margins.
The teeth lacked ordinary mammalian enamel and could process vegetation throughout life.
Carbon signals range from open-ground plants to browse and mixed feeding, so one menu cannot describe the entire genus.
A giant spread across the Americas
Skeletons, individual bones and teeth document a pan-American history. The genus crossed landscapes linked by the Great American Biotic Interchange, but each occurrence belongs to a specific time and environment. A tropical Brazilian individual cannot automatically define the ecology of one from Florida.
Large adults approached elephant scale. Mass estimates use limb-bone dimensions and reconstructed body proportions rather than claw length or one vertebra. A range is more honest than one universal number.
Support, claws and posture
A massive pelvis, strong hind limbs and heavy tail could stabilise the animal when its front body rose. This posture would bring higher branches within reach and could also make the claws effective in defence. It does not imply habitual bipedal walking.
The later species had three functional fingers, two bearing large claws. The feet rested on their outer margins, a specialised arrangement shared in broad form with other giant ground sloths. Joint surfaces demonstrate movement, but do not reveal speed from a still skeleton.
Teeth and a variable diet
The teeth grew continuously and lacked the enamel covering typical of most mammals. Their wear is consistent with plant food. Carbon isotopes show that some individuals ate more open-ground vegetation while others browsed leaves or mixed resources.
One Belize tooth preserved a sequence covering about a year and recorded seasonal shifts in food and water. That individual provides a biological diary, not a fixed calendar for every population. Brazilian collagen evidence also supports herbivory rather than regular meat eating.
Not simply a northern Megatherium
Eremotherium and Megatherium were both megatheriid ground sloths, but they differ in skull, hand and geographic history. The first occupied more tropical and northern regions, while the best-known Megatherium fossils are concentrated farther south.
Megalonyx was another ground sloth with a different limb plan and North American history. Their shared large claws do not make the genera interchangeable.
Evidence limits
Bones establish the load-bearing framework and teeth preserve dietary information. Dense fur, skin folds, lip form, colour and the pace of movement are less direct. Tropical populations should not be covered automatically in the heavy coat familiar from cold-climate mammoth art.
