Megalonyx was a North American genus of ground sloths that survived from the late Neogene to the end of the Pleistocene. The best-known species, M. jeffersonii, reached the size of a large bear and ranged from Central America to Alaska and Yukon.
Unlike genera known from one tooth type, Megalonyx is represented by substantial skeletons. Wide feet, powerful limbs and large claws are anatomical facts. Fur, colour, feeding posture and the details of seasonal movement remain reconstructions.

What can the fossils tell us?
His 1799 publication introduced the genus before its ground-sloth identity was fully understood.
The body plan is known from much more than isolated teeth, although species differed through time.
High latitude does not mean the animal lived on permanent ice or in an unbroken Arctic winter.
Leaves and shoots are likely foods, but proportions changed across its broad range.
From Jefferson's bones to a ground sloth
Thomas Jefferson presented large Virginia bones in 1797 and initially compared the claws with those of a lion. His 1799 publication introduced the name Megalonyx. Anselme Desmarest added the species name jeffersonii in 1822.
Later work placed the fossils among ground sloths and corrected a complicated series of names. The episode shows how identification improves when claws are joined with jaws, teeth and skeletons rather than interpreted alone.
More than one species through time
The genus includes a succession of forms rather than one unchanged animal lasting millions of years. Earlier species were generally smaller and cannot automatically be labelled M. jeffersonii. Differences among well-preserved skeletons must also be separated from age, sex and individual variation.
The North American record can be placed within the Cenozoic Era and the changing climates shown by the geological time scale.
How far north did it live?
Twenty-two bones from ten localities in the Old Crow Basin of northern Yukon demonstrate a high-latitude presence. Their size and geological setting link them with a warm interglacial phase of the Late Pleistocene.
This distinction matters. A point on a modern Arctic map does not prove life beside permanent glaciers. Vegetation and temperatures shifted north and south as climate changed, opening suitable habitat during warmer intervals.
Body and feeding
Strong limbs and large curved claws could pull vegetation within reach and provide defence. Broad feet carried the body on land. Tooth structure and common association with forests or woodland support browsing on leaves and shoots.
This is an ecological inference rather than a preserved feeding observation. Plants varied across a range that extended thousands of kilometres, so one universal menu is unlikely. Eremotherium shows a different giant-sloth body and a more tropical distribution.
Reconstruction limits
The skeleton constrains posture and proportions. Hair length, seasonal coat, lip shape, colour and social organisation do not have the same support. A cold-looking landscape can be especially misleading for fossils that actually belong to a warm northern interval.
